Study Tour #2

The second Forest-PLUS Study Tour will take place for two weeks in late June and early July of 2014. Tetra Tech will host 9 professional foresters from across India to come to the United States for a series of presentations, meetings, and field visits sharing best practices in forest management. This tour’s theme will be the theory and practice of integrated ecosystem-based management.

The first portion of the trip will be in the Washington DC area, where participants will have the opportunity to exchange ideas and experiences with forestry professionals working US Federal Government Departments responsible for managing forested areas, Non-Profit/Thank Tank, Academia. These meetings and presentations will give participants to the latest US scientific and technological developments, examples of successful cooperative multi-sector initiatives, and many networking opportunities to strengthen relationships between US and Indian forestry professionals. Washington DC visits will fall under three categories:

  • US Federal Government Departments responsible for managing forested areas. These will include a presentation and panel discussion at the US Forest Service. Topics will include forestry management techniques as well as building cross-sector partnerships between government, private sector, and civil society.
  • Non-Profit/Thank Tanks. Meetings will highlight NGOs’ roles in forestry management and see some of the latest research and technological developments coming from these organizations.
  • Academia. The Tetra Tech team is in conversation with several scholars in relevant disciplines and plans to invite them as guest lecturers to lead presentations and participate in discussions with Indian Foresters.

The second portion of the trip will be held conducting field visits at three USFS locations in Oregon, and will be organized in cooperation with the USFS. At each site, study tour participants will have a combination of presentations, exchanging experiences, and tours of the forests themselves. They are listed as follows:

  • Deschutes National Forest is located in Central Oregon, on the eastern side of the Cascade Mountain Range. Study tour group will meet with foresters with the USFS who operate the forest, specifically their ecosystem based management approach.
  • HJ Andrews Experimental Forest is also located in Central Oregon and is administered cooperatively by the US Forest Service’s Pacific Northwest Research Station, Oregon State University, and the Willamette National Forest. Research topics include forests, streams, and watersheds. It was first established as an experimental forest in 1948.
  • US Forest Service Offices in Corvallis, OR. Study tour participants will meet with Forest Service staff, particularly PNW Corvallis Research Scientist Keith Reynolds, who has been one of the key researchers developing an Ecosystem Management Decision Support Tool (EMDS). EMDS is an application framework to help make knowledge-based ecological assessments at a variety of geographic scales. A demonstration of EMDS would give insight into the computer-based tools that are available to administer an ecosystem based approach to natural resources management.

In addition to these professional development activities, participants will also have an opportunity to participate in American cultural activities, including the Washington Mall and monuments, Smithsonian Museums, and the National Zoo, as well as Independence Day Festivities in the Nation’s capital.
